Building a Strong, Accessible Oakville: Celebrating National AccessAbility Week 2026

Community Events

Our community is at its best when everyone can participate fully, share their talents, and connect with one another. Whether you are walking along Dundas Street, enjoying the fresh air at Lion's Valley Park, or commuting across town, creating an inclusive environment makes us all stronger. That is why we are so excited to celebrate National AccessAbility Week 2026!

Running from May 31 to June 6, 2026, National AccessAbility Week takes place every year starting on the last Sunday in May. This year’s national theme is "Building a Strong, Accessible Canada." It is a wonderful opportunity for all Ontarians to celebrate the leadership of persons with disabilities and honor the local allies, organizations, and volunteers working hard to remove daily barriers.

Making a Difference in Our Neighborhoods

True accessibility goes beyond ramps and automatic doors. It is about creating a culture of belonging in every single neighborhood. From accessible programming in the arts to inclusive sports leagues, local organizations are shifting the landscape. To kickstart the week, the fourth annual Canadian Congress on Disability Inclusion will host a free virtual event on May 28, 2026, offering practical ways to make our workplaces and social spaces open to everyone.

Volunteers play a massive role in this collective effort. By giving your time, you can directly support community initiatives that foster independence, connection, and equity. Whether you are helping out at beloved local spots or assisting with a specialized program, your actions ripple outward to build a fairer society.

Get Involved and Spread the Word

We invite you to join the conversation, challenge biases, and actively promote disability inclusion. You can learn more about how to support these efforts by checking out the About Us page on Volunteer Oakville to see how we champion local inclusion year-round.

Let's work together to ensure that no one is left on the sidelines, no matter the season or whatever comes our way. Take a moment today to explore open positions in our volunteer opportunities database and discover how you can support inclusion in our region. Share this post with your friends and family, use the hashtag #VolunteerOakville, and help us spread the word about building an accessible community for all!
